What is a safe zone?
A safe zone is the part of a short video that no app button or caption will cover. On TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Reels, the app puts buttons on the right side and your name and caption at the bottom. Anything under them is hard to see. This free checker shows you what gets covered. Add a photo or video, pick an app, and you see your post on a phone with the covered parts in red stripes. The dashed line marks the safe part. Keep your words, your logo, your phone number, and your face inside that line. A simple rule for all four apps: leave the top 15% and the bottom 35% clear, and stay away from the sides. On TikTok, stay farther from the right side. Your file stays on your device, there is no sign-up, and it is free.
What are the safe zone sizes for each app?
Here is how much to keep clear on a 1080 x 1920 file, in pixels.
| App | Top | Bottom | Left | Right |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 240 | 660 | 120 | 120, or 300 by the buttons |
| Instagram Reels | 269 | 672 | 65 | 65 |
| YouTube Shorts | 288 | 672 | 48 | 192 |
| Facebook Reels | 269 | 672 | 65 | 65 |
Where do these numbers come from?
Each app name in the table links to its source. Google and Meta share their numbers for ads, and we use those. TikTok shares a template file, and we took its numbers from that. The apps do not share numbers for regular posts, but the buttons sit in about the same spots. Buttons also move a bit from phone to phone, so leave some extra room.
What should a local business keep inside the safe zone?
Keep anything that gets you the job. That means your phone number, your price or offer, your logo, your town, and words like "Book today." In a before and after video, keep the work itself in the middle of the screen. Your face should sit in the upper middle, away from the caption.
